  • AlpineBiker tours- feedback

If you are one of the 18,500 visitors to this blog since I started posting in 2009, thanks very much for your visit, and I hope you found something on here of interest to you.  My blog however, is an add-on to my main website www.alpinebiker.com. which perhaps you may not have visited yet?  The tour website features films, pictures and details of the types of alpine tours I offer,  and have run so far.

I put a lot of time and effort into providing excellent quality and high value tours, and into giving people a really special riding experience in the  amazing  mountain scenery and awesome alpine passes, and from being on some of the best roads in Europe.  My tours have attracted riders from all over the world,  and I’m very proud to be able to post just a few representative comments from some of those riders from America,  Norway and  Australia, who have recently taken an AlpineBiker tour and thoroughly enjoyed it . (Check the tour website for other comments from riders from the UK, Canada, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands)

If you haven’t yet visited the tour website www.alpinebiker.com, perhaps these comments may inspire you to do so and see what these guys are talking about, and see for yourself what you’ve been missing?

Eddie (USA) Your passion for motorcycling and touring the Alps is apparent in your attitude and from the detailed planning and thinking that went into making the trip a once in a lifetime vacation. Thank you for sharing that gift and passion with me and the others. I would not hesitate to highly recommend you to others and to book another trip with you in the future.  Sincerely  Eddie”

Mike (Canada) It clearly takes a true biker with a wealth of experience riding in the region to put together a spectacular tour like the one we enjoyed this summer. It also takes hard work and an eye for detail in the planning phase. I think the “something extra” that assured the success of our tour was your patience, good humour and genuine interest in seeing us all really enjoy ourselves.

Thanks Paul for an amazing adventure. I am certainly recommending an alpinebiker tour to my biking friends and acquaintances, and I am looking forward to my next chance to ride with you”.

This trip exceeded expectations with both Paul’s leadership of the tour, and the quality of the lodging and food at the Le Biot chalet”.

  • AlpineBiker tour film- Gorges du Verdon

I’ve been playing with my new editing software, and here’s another film from the AlpineBiker tour last August. Taken as night started to fall it’s a little dark at the beginning but hopefully conveys the size and beauty of the gorges. Click on link to view.

  • AlpineBiker tour film- Col de Leuns

I’ve finally got round to getting decent film editing software so here’s my first attempt. The film was taken on Tronds GoPro camera during  our tour last August, and is on the Col de Leuns in France. Click on the link below to view.

  • San Bernardino- 2066m

The San Bernadino pass at 2066m is in my opinion best ridden from South to North.  It is approached via the Swiss autoroute, and then fast A roads which climb in huge radius open corners and through tunnels, up to the village of San Bernadino. There is a conveniently placed petrol station at the foot of the pass and I often fill up here, but you may prefer to enjoy the benefits of less weight in your tank to allow maximum pleasure riding the twisties which await you.

I prefer the South-North direction due to the flow of the bends. At the foot they climb quite gently, then suddenly become more serpentine and come incessantly one after another.

Height is gained quite rapidly, and although it would be great to stop and take pictures of the views behind you, you’ll be enjoying the ride so much, you won’t won’t want to stop as the bends will just keep you riding on and on towards the summit, where the road flattens out, and you arrive at the restaurant and lake, where I always stop for a coffee and rest, and to enthuse with my fellow riders about the ascent just made.

The descent is equally as good, if not better. Initially the road has very tight radiused bends which demand 2nd if not 1st gear, but there is good visibility to see far ahead and cut the corners, but beware the postal bus and coaches which wend their way very slowly up to the top.  Further down the roads become a long sequence of tight hairpins interspersed with point and squirt stretches in between. Careful here though if you have a heavy bike, push too hard and you’ll overcook the brake fluid, I speak from experience.

At the foot of the pass you will have a short stretch before arriving at Splugen and the option to take this col South to Chiavenna, although in my opinion, this is a pass you’ll not miss if you never ride it, otherwise continue on to Thusis, and if you need a recommendation of where to stay, try the Berggasthaus Beverin, it’s a bit special and run by a bike mad owner.

If you want to stop in San Bernardino village there are 4 hotels there. I have stopped in the Brocco e Posta (Post Hotel) and enjoyed the food and atmosphere there.

For those interested in riding in the opposite direction, you will be rewarded with arguably better views, but in my view a less enjoyable riding experience, but if you have the time, why not ride it both ways and decide for yourself?
